A Mining Camp, Twice Lucky
Aspen boomed on silver in the 1880s, emptied after the crash of 1893, and sat quietly in its valley until skiing and the postwar imagination found it. Walter Paepcke's Aspen Institute brought ideas to the mountain in 1949, the lifts brought everyone else, and by the 1960s the town had become the place where American money learned to dress for snow.
Aerin Lauder, granddaughter of Estée Lauder and a lifelong visitor, assembled this album for Assouline's travel series in 2017. It is a scrapbook of the town's two fortunes, ore and glamour, told in photographs of miners, racers, film stars and firelit rooms.
