The Library Essay

An Island Practised at Being Admired

Capri has been a resort for two thousand years. Tiberius governed Rome from its cliffs, the Grand Tour rediscovered it, the Blue Grotto made it famous in the nineteenth century, and by the 1950s its piazzetta was the summer drawing room of everyone the cameras followed. Sandals, capri pants and a certain idea of Mediterranean idleness went out from this one small island to the world.

Cesare Cunaccia's volume for Assouline's travel series, published in 2019, gathers the island's evidence, photographs of writers, industrialists and film stars at ease against the rocks. It is a portrait of a place that made hospitality to the famous into a craft, and kept its looks throughout.
