An Archive the Size of a Career
Frank Lloyd Wright worked for over seventy years, from the Prairie houses of the 1890s through Fallingwater to the Guggenheim, which opened six months after his death in 1959, and he kept nearly everything. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who directed the Wright archives at Taliesin, spent his life with that material, and these three volumes present the whole span of it, built and unbuilt, drawing by drawing.
Taschen published the set in its XL format in 2009, scaled so that Wright's presentation drawings, which were persuasive instruments as much as plans, can be read as he meant clients to read them. Taken together the volumes show something a single famous building cannot, the sheer continuity of one imagination revising the American house, office, church and museum for seven decades.
