The Library Essay
A Small Body of Work That Changed Everything
Leonardo da Vinci finished remarkably little. Somewhere under twenty surviving paintings are generally attributed to him, and several of those are incomplete, yet on that small foundation rests much of European painting's ambition. What he did produce without stint was drawing, thousands of sheets of anatomy, machines, water, faces and storms, the visible working of a mind that treated art and inquiry as one activity.
Frank Zöllner's catalogue of the paintings, joined with Johannes Nathan's survey of the drawings, was first published by Taschen in 2003 and reissued at XXL scale in 2019. The enlargements matter; at this size the reader can follow the pentimenti and hatching, which is as close as print can bring anyone to watching him think.
