Winter Was a Wager
In the autumn of 1864 the St Moritz hotelier Johannes Badrutt bet his departing English summer guests that they would enjoy the Engadine in winter, promising to refund the journey if he was wrong. He won, winter tourism in the Alps dates its founding from that wager, and the village went on to stage the Cresta Run, two Winter Olympics and a century and a half of society season at altitude.
The historian Dora Lardelli tells the resort's story for Assouline's travel series, published in 2018, through the hotels, races and visitors that built its legend. St Moritz appears in it as what it was, an invention, a piece of hospitality theatre so successful that the world forgot winter holidays had ever needed inventing.
