Five Hundred Artists, No Ranks
Phaidon's The Art Book, first published in 1994, made one organising decision and let it do all the work: five hundred artists, one page and one work each, in alphabetical order. The alphabet dissolves the hierarchies of school, period and nation, so unexpected neighbours face each other across every spread, and the beginner meets Fra Angelico and a living painter on equal footing.
The formula proved one of the most successful in art publishing, selling in the millions across many languages and spawning a family of companion volumes. The 2020 edition refreshed the roster, broadening its geography and adding artists earlier editions overlooked. It remains what it set out to be, the least intimidating serious introduction to art in print.
