The Library Essay

Longevity Leaves Evidence

Jim Collins and Jerry Porras spent six years at Stanford asking why some companies endure for generations while their nearest rivals merely do well. Built to Last, published in 1994, compares eighteen long-lived companies with matched competitors founded in the same eras, and looks for the habits that separate them.

The findings run against romance. Enduring companies were rarely built on a single great idea or a charismatic founder; they were built as institutions, with fixed core convictions and a restless willingness to change everything else. The book's vocabulary, clock building rather than time telling, big audacious goals, passed into everyday management speech, which is its own kind of evidence.
