The Library Essay

Scuttlebutt Is Research

Philip Fisher ran his San Francisco investment firm from 1931 and published this book in 1958, when growth investing had no name. His method was the opposite of screen-reading: talk to a company's customers, suppliers, competitors and former employees, the scuttlebutt, and buy only the handful of businesses that pass his fifteen points, then hold them for years or decades.

The book has stayed in print ever since as a Wiley Investment Classic, and its influence is a matter of record; Warren Buffett has long described his own approach as a blend of Benjamin Graham's discipline on price with Fisher's discipline on quality. Fisher's patience, buying well and then sitting still, remains the hardest of his lessons to practise.
