The Leap Left a Paper Trail

Jim Collins and his research team spent five years sifting the Fortune 500 for companies that had gone from long mediocrity to sustained outperformance, found eleven, and matched each against a comparison company that had the same opportunity and stayed ordinary. Good to Great, published in 2001, reports what separated them, and little of it is glamorous: modest and wilful leaders, the right people settled before the strategy, brutal facts faced early, and a flywheel of small consistent pushes rather than one dramatic programme.

The book became one of the most widely read management studies of its decade, and its coinages entered the language of business. Its method has been debated, as any study built on hindsight will be, but its central observation, that greatness looks undramatic while it is happening, has worn well.
