The Letters Were Already a Book
Warren Buffett never wrote a book, but for decades he wrote his Berkshire Hathaway shareholders an annual letter that taught more than most books manage, on accounting, governance, valuation and the temperament investing actually requires. Lawrence Cunningham, a law professor, saw that the letters formed a coherent body of thought scattered by chronology, and in 1997 arranged them by theme instead, with Buffett's cooperation.
The arrangement is the whole art of it; freed from the calendar, the letters read as the sustained argument they always were, delivered in Buffett's plain, funny, aphoristic prose. The eighth edition of 2023 carries the collection forward, and it remains the closest thing there is to the book Buffett would have written.
