The Market Is a Manic Business Partner
Benjamin Graham wrote The Intelligent Investor in 1949 to carry his Columbia teaching to the lay reader, and its heart is a pair of images that have organised sober investing ever since. Mr. Market is an obliging partner who quotes you a price every day and is frequently out of his mind, to be used and never obeyed; the margin of safety is the discount to value that protects you from error, including your own.
Warren Buffett, who studied under Graham and worked for him, has called it by far the best book about investing ever written, and the revised edition pairs Graham's text with his preface and Jason Zweig's chapter-by-chapter commentary connecting it to modern markets. The advice has survived every fashion since, chiefly because it is addressed to the investor's character rather than his forecasts.
