Compounding, Applied to a Life
Warren Buffett chose Alice Schroeder, a Wall Street insurance analyst whose work he admired, to write his life, and gave her years of interviews and open access to family, friends and files, telling her that where accounts differed she should use the less flattering version. The result, published in 2008, is the fullest portrait of Buffett in existence, from the Omaha paper rounds and the pinball machines through the partnership years to Berkshire Hathaway.
The title is Buffett's own image, the snowball of money and understanding rolling downhill from an early start, and Schroeder's contribution is to show the cost side of the ledger too, the obsession and the debts to family that the public legend smooths over. The updated edition of 2009 condensed the text without softening it.
